Circuit of the past · Hockenheim
The circuit near the town of Hockenheim in south-west Germany was long one of the fastest on the calendar: its long straights disappeared into the forest, broken up only by chicanes. Formula 1 first came here in 1970, and after Lauda’s crash at the Nürburgring every German Grand Prix but one up to 2006 was held at Hockenheim. In 2000 Rubens Barrichello won the first race of his career here from eighteenth on the grid.
In 2002 the circuit was rebuilt: the forest straights were removed and the lap was shortened to 4.574 km. From 2008 to 2014 Hockenheim hosted the German Grand Prix every other year, alternating with the Nürburgring, and then again in 2016, 2018 and 2019. In 2018 race leader Sebastian Vettel crashed here in the rain, and Lewis Hamilton won from fourteenth on the grid; the last race, in 2019, was won by Max Verstappen.
