Circuit of the past · Detroit
The track was laid out through the streets of downtown Detroit, around the Renaissance Center towers. Slow, bumpy and full of right-angle corners, it was punishing for cars and drivers alike. John Watson won the first race, in 1982, from seventeenth on the grid, and in 1983 Michele Alboreto gave Tyrrell the team’s last ever win here.
Ayrton Senna won in Detroit three years in a row, from 1986 to 1988 — in 1987 in a Lotus with active suspension. After 1988 the American round moved to Phoenix.
