Circuit of the past · Istanbul
The circuit on the Asian side of Istanbul was designed by Hermann Tilke and runs anticlockwise. Its trademark is Turn 8, a long left-hander with several apexes that the cars take at huge speed. Kimi Räikkönen won the first Turkish Grand Prix, in 2005, and Felipe Massa won here three times in a row, from 2006 to 2008.
After 2011 the Turkish Grand Prix disappeared from the calendar, and it returned in 2020, when the season was being redrawn because of the pandemic. The fresh asphalt was as slippery as ice in the rain, and Lewis Hamilton won both the race and his seventh title, equalling Michael Schumacher’s tally. In 2021 Valtteri Bottas won here.
