Circuit of the past · Indianapolis
From 1950 to 1960 the Indianapolis 500 was part of the World Championship, although European teams almost never took part: in 1952 Alberto Ascari was a rare exception, starting here in a Ferrari. The winners were American drivers in cars built for ovals; Bill Vukovich won twice and was killed here in 1955 while leading the race.
From 2000 to 2007 the venue hosted the United States Grand Prix on a road course inside the oval that used part of the oval itself and ran clockwise. Michael Schumacher won five of the eight races. In 2002 he slowed before the line so as to cross it level with his team-mate and handed the win to Rubens Barrichello — by eleven thousandths of a second. In 2005 only six cars started because of problems with Michelin tyres.
